  • Provenance: 

    On the 2nd fly-leaf is Liber magistri Symonis de Meppham. This is Simon Mepham, Archbishop of Canterbury from 1327 to 1333. This and the preceding volume are therefore from Christ Church, Canterbury. There is also a xvth cent. title on 2nd fly-leaf. I have little doubt that they are the volumes in Edwards, p.233, though the donor's name is not given. In Ingram, no.16 Thomas super luc. et joh. 2 fo. giamque eius.

  • The decorative work is by the same hand as B.14.18.
    f.1. Initial. Ground lozengy of blue and gold with fleurs de lys, as in no.2 of the other volume. A seated pope, in tall red peaked tiara without crown, and pink chasuble over alb, receives a book from Thomas, in Dominican habit kneeling on R. Small initial to Luke. Luke seated, writing at desk: over his head the head of the ox in a cloud, scroll in mouth, LUCAS.
    Border with dogs and rabbits.
    f.184. Large initial, almost absolutely identical with that on f.1. Border with greyhounds and rabbits.
    f.184b. Small initial to John, like that to Luke: only that the eagle's head is put instead of the ox's. Decorative border.
